Yes - get a new doctor! You deserve adequate pain relief, and according to JCAHO (the joint commission that hospitals must answer to in order to be funded, or they face heavy penalties). As a matter of fact, pain is now the new "5th vital sign" assessed in hospitals nationwide. All you have to do is a little online research, and present it to your physician, informing him that you are aware of your rights as a patient. Needless suffering (acute, or chronic) by patients is no longer tolerated. This is a huge step for 100,000's of chronic pain patients that for years had to just endure it. I too suffered for years - and I am a nurse! I was too timid to stand up for myself - until I had no choice, and my quality of life was at stake. Narcotic pain medication is not just for dying cancer patients any more (and never was!). You deserve better, but for years we didn't know that we have that basic right. Good luck - and stand your ground - make it clear that you have legitimate, documented pain and expect relief. If he/she refuses, request a referal to a pain management clinic. These folks are anesthesiologists - pain control is their specialty. They have multiple modalities of managing pain in many different ways, and they will believe you, respect you, and make you a memeber of your own care team (with input and choices) - what a novel approach!
