Sarah,my daughter was born missing her right breast and nipple as well as the pectoral muscles and her 2nd, 3rd & 4th rib only grew to under her armpit. All this was on the right side of her body. The left side was completely 'normal'. The right side of her chest was concaved and only skin covered the part of her chest where her ribs were missing. As she grew older and began to develop on the left side, I would sew a pocket into the bra on the right side and we would insert a prostetic to try to keep her somewhat even. We were very lucky to find a thoractic surgeon at Walter Reed Hospitol and he followed her from her birth. He retired from the army and went to live in Oregon and we kept in touch over the years with a phone call now and then. He became chief surgeon at Oregon Health Sciences University. We flew out to Oregon in Nov.'99 and he performed her reconstructive surgery. I cannot say enough about how wonderful the hospital staff and everyone out there were. She may need 'touch up' surgery to even things out but right now she is perfectly happy like she is. She is now 18 and has decided to become a nurse which she will start school for in the fall. You can write me anytime. I'd like to help you in any way I can, even to the point of 'hooking' you up with some people out there that can help you. Her dr. has since retired but was holding a teaching position at the hospital. He is a wonderful man and the surgery he performed turned out beautifully. Please feel free to email me.
