There is no simple answer to your question. I am waiting to have my second surgery scheduled in three weeks - this time fusion on L4-L5.I have tried absolutely everything BEFORE I went ahead with another surgery. However, at his age, I would try everything else FIRST. Please look up VAX D therapy on the internet and see if there is someone in your area doing this sort of treatment. I have seen miracles - although it didn't work for me. There are similar treatments and it DOES WORK! Write to me, tell me where you live and perhaps I can see what is available in your area. I would not rush into surgery at his age until I had tried many other alternatives including just TIME! Let me hear from you. I know what it is to live in excruciating pain.
