I have a young son who has also experienced this. Young boys often have severe nosebleeds as part of their growth spurts. It is pretty scary when it happens for the parents as it looks so horrible, but is quite normal in boys. He should grow out of it as his growth spurts tapper off when he gets older. Obviously like any of us if you're concerned get medical advice.
