tonsilectomy

I had the surgery when I was 20, that was four years ago and I haven't had any throat infection since. Yes, the days following surgery were very difficult, but I can offer some recommendations. DON"T LISTEN TO EVERYONE ELSE WHO BEGINS THE CONVERSATION WITH..."When my son/daughter had their tonsils out..." You are an adult and your pain will be adult pain. And the old addage eat ice cream really doesn't help, think of having ice cream and think of how thirsty for water it amkes you, now think of having that film in the back of your throat and no way to clear it. Try the fruit sherbet or sorbet, and nothing red. If you eat something red, it will be harder to see if you develop an infection. Try luke warm liquids and believe it or not, Pedialyte saved my life. Because it is filled with electrolytes and nutrients it really helped boost my strength and get me over the hump to recovery. And if you can, take yourself off of the pain medicaton slowly, it will help you feel better. Most pain killers give you a tummy ache and make you produce excess saliva which you have to swallow accross your scars. You will feel sick enough without the added discomfort given in pain killers. Above all else, listen to your throat, undoubtably you have had some extremely bad infections, treat your surgery like a bad infection. You should listen to yourself and no one else, not even me if you so chose. Take every suggestion as a recommendation but not the only choice. Take comfort in knowing that it will be no worse than your worst strep throat, althoug it will be hard to remember. Tkae care of yourself before and after the surgery. I am often thankful for having the surgery done, I can't beleive I waited so long to feel this good! Best wishes
