serotinin levels and depression

Serotonin is a Neurotransmitter. This means that it tells the brain when something hurts. Our seritonin drops when we are under physical or emotional pain. If her levels are low lack of energy, desire to do "anything" and even achy pains are almost garunteed!!! There are plenty of Seritonin drugs on the market...Prozac, Zoloft, paxil. Then there is also the so called natural ones like St john's wort. But it can only be taken for short periods of time. There is anewer one available over the counter for people with chronic pain and mild depresion....SAM-e. It's expensive but it does raise both Seritonin and dopamine levels. So the answer is if they doctors KNOW that her seritonin levels are low, she needs to replace them until she is feeling better! I would give the prescription meds a chance first. Good LUck!
