Contact the division of mental health in your state. I live in missouri and work with mentally ill clients in a independant supported living enviroment. ( this means that they have staff who assist our clients with the day to day tasks of running thier own homes, most of our clients are funded by the division of mental health along with the division for aging and social security in some cases.)I don't know about legal obligations of your mother in law but you may at least be given access to an advocate on his behalf in acessing his entitlement of her estate.
