Porphyria

Hi, you were asking if oral activated charcoal is beneifical for AIP. YES. The charcoal absorbs the fat soluble porphyrins from the gut, preventing them from being reabsorbed. It is a recognized porphyria treatment. I have the charcoal capsules made up as the stuff available in health food stores has alot of other stuff in it and it is expensive. Trick to using charcoal...charcoal absorbs everything. So it must be taken one hour before meals and other mediactions and two hours after meals and other medications. Don't let anyone talk you into taking it in liquid form-ugh and very messy. I was put on this treatment by a specialist in Internal Medicine and treatment was supported by Porphyria Specialist who has all his patients on it. Good luck. leanne
