Hello, I am in a similar situation to your wife. I am a 27 year old woman and went to the doctor last week with the flu. After the examination I told him that I sometimes feel short of breath at night whilst sleeping and wake up coughing or catching my breath, and also sometimes experience fluttering in my chest. I was diagnosed with a heart murmur when I was little, but they said it had gone away by the time I was about 7 years old. Anyway, I asked the doctor to check it out and he said he could hear it. He has booked me in for an echocardiograph next week. Although it is not really worrying me, I figure it can't hurt to get it checked out. Remember you and your wife are not alone and maybe you shouldn't be too worried about it until you get specialists' opinion. Good Luck.
