Dear Michelle and Fran, my 13 1/2 year old is going through much the same thing. Right now she is in a Boston brace to hold a 30 degree curve. I did a ton of research and came up with a new bracing system called Spincor (www.biorthex.com) that may prove more effective. It is hard to make them wear the brace, but if her curve is that severe, the brace could make a difference in the level of pain she has as well as keeping the curve from getting worse.
