I have had fibromyalgia about 15 yrs and it has got worse now to the point I had to quit work 4 yrs ago. Yes a major trauma like an accident can cause FM, I have been in 3 auto accidents that were pretty bad. I now have FM in my body so bad that I am in pain all the time. Finding a good neurologist or rhematoid doctor is of great help because they are more used to treating FM. Not many regular MD's know much about it. A physchiatrist is very helpful also as they can help with medication for depression that usually goes along with it. There is a great book you can get at barnes and knoble by Devin Starlanyl called Fibromyalgia & Chronic Myofascial Pain Syndrome Cost is around 18.95 and has been a big life saver to answering my questions and my survival. The author Devin Starlanyl also has many articals on the internet to read. Please be patient and understanding with your girlfriend as FM is what they call an invisiable disease which means you look alright on the outside but your in severe pain on the inside that others cannot see.
