Hip pain can be confusing even to specialists. The diagnosis for bursitis is based on the location and character of the pain, how it started and by trying to rule out other causes of the pain. Often an MRI is done to see if the pain is actually referred pain that originates from a spinal problem. I have no personal knowledge regarding knee pain. Hope this helps--chris
