Dear Laura: Before you spend money on products that are not guaranteed to work, try some natural treatments, easy to do and cost next to nothing. First is to change your diet. Your husband should stay off citrus fruits (oranges, grapefruits) and tomatoes; avoid spicy foods; avoid onions and garlic. Stay off caffeine products - avoid coffee, strong tea, chocolate, cola drinks. Stay off all kinds of soda - they irritate the stomach. Some people are also bothered by milk and dairy products. Some people are troubled by fatty foods. Avoid dried fruits such as raisins. Drink lots of water throughout the day - at least 8 glasses a day. Don't eat later than 3 hours before bedtime. Don't lie down after eating. Next, have him raise the head of his/your bed 6 inches: put wood blocks or bricks under the legs at the upper end of the bed. That keeps the reflux from seeping up into the esophagus (digestive tract) while he's sleeping. He should also take an antacid like Tums. If those things don't help, he can buy Prilosec or Prevacid at the pharmacy; or have a doctor prescribe a medication that will control the reflux. I did all these things, and I no longer have a problem. Good luck to you and him.
