Your story is my story, from time to time, I am in such pain that I do not understand how I can live with it, I learnt to live with it, when I can hardly move I know some move "active" the "thing" and the only thing that works for me is rest at the beginning and exercise after few days, (I tried everything in the world)you say you are in so much pain that does not allowed you to exercise, wait at start exercising, but!!! you have to exercise at least 3 times a week, very seriously, never! let a week pass by, it is the only thing is going to help you, heavy weights, of course not to heavy! you have to do a lot of back exercises and you have to work in making your upper and lower back muscles very strong, age is very important, if you are over 35, start a routine right now because things are going to get worse if you don't, as we get older we dry, and our bones suffer, you have to take at least 10 glasses of water a day, this change my life, I am always in pain but is a pain that you learn to leave with it, and in very good shape, and my back is super strong! I am 38, I take 15 glasses of water a day, and I hate medicines, I do not take anything, when I get my downs, sometimes I do the wrong "move" I put with the pain, resting first...warm bath tubs are good, not cold, not hot, just enough to relax your back, do not take medicines, you are ruin other parts of your body and they work against you, at the end they produce more back pain! I can not explain it right now but it is true, I bought a machime that you hang yourself upside down, in the "back store", after you rest a few days and start with your exercises you NEED to hang yourself upside down, it works! stretches your back, is great, massages are good too. The thinking is: ok I am going to leave the rest of my life with this back problem, what do I do to be able to "live" You do not want to be addicted to medicines until the day you die right? you will dye earlier, so no matter what doctors say, or what medicines they give you, just "train" your back and teach it to be able to hold you, remember it has to hold, how many pounds!!!?? and eat healthy, if your are overweight, right there would be a serious problem, I am 5'8" and keep myself in 114 pounds...do not want my back to hold 135 pounds!! Good luck and...DO IT
