colonoscopy

Bon: Because I have Crohn’s Disease, I have had several colonoscopy’s. Honestly, I find them very interesting. Each time, my doctor sedated me enough so that I wouldn’t mind the discomfort or the embarrassment, but I was still alert enough to watch the video monitor as the camera moved through my colon. On one trip through he could see some inflammation, so I watched as the little “claw” took a biopsy of the tissue. Also, when he got up as far as my small intestine, I could actually see the narrowing of the intestine where I had previously had re-section surgery between the small and large intestine. It is so amazing to be able to see inside your own body! Put your fears aside – it is not painful! If I had to choose which was the worst part of it, I would say it is the anxiety before the procedure based on the idea that I think I will be embarrassed because of the position you have to be in with someone maneuvering a tube with a camera on the end of it up through your rectum, but when you’re lightly sedated, hey! you just don’t care! And besides, the doctors are used to this – it’s just part of their job. So, chin up! You can do it! And just ask your doctor to set the video monitor so that you can watch the procedure. Have fun! -- Sandy
