Child in body cast (spica cast)

Jean (from PA)

My grand-daughter was in a body cast as a baby (crawling age). 1. You must get Jumbo Diapers or depending how large the child is you might need depends or something like that (much larger than normally wear) to fit over the cast. 2. We cut and put sanitary pads inside the opening they leave at their bottom, then the diaper over top of it for appearances and to help with leakages. 3. We got a special car seat from the Shriner's Hospital in Philadelphia Pennsylvania because regular ones won't work. They offer them for free as long as you return it. Her cast kept her in a some-what sitting and legs spread apart position. The car seat had a much narrow depth and plenty of room for the spread legs. 4. I searched until I found a high-chair that had an extra large tray that could be pulled out very far compared to others then I put a pillow behind her to fill in the gap since her bent position didn't give her enough seating area and put her close to the edge of seats. 5. I put pillows snugly all around her at night and for naps to comfort her to sleep better. 6. I attached different toys etc. to the sides and above her crib and changed them off & on. 7. She also had to sleep in traction so I alternated pillows under her body to give her a little change of positions. 8. I put her crib near a window during the day and to a dark corner at nap time or bedtime so she knew when it was time to sleep. The window also gave her something to look at during the day. If I frogot anything feel free to ask or email.
