My son is 7 years old. I believe that he has selective mutism. He completed Kindergarten this past year. I didn't start him in Kindergarten until he was six. He has a summer birthday and I did not feel he mature enough when he was five. He is the most loveable kid. He is my middle child. Thank goodness for his teacher this year she was terrific. My guy would not talk in school. If he did speak you could tell he was very anxious. He would rub his eyes, ring his hands, pull his ears. It is very painful to watch. Finally toward the end of the year he started to loosen up. My concerns and his Kindergarten teachers concerns are for next year. He really has to know you to open up. He met several times with the school councelor and that will continue into first grade. He also has problems with his fine motor skills. He is left handed. Because of his reluctance to answer questions he was referred to the child study team for evaluation. I was hoping for a Communication Handicap classification. He was not classified. Now it's up to me. I need to get him occupational therapy as well as a good doctor to help him with the selective mutism. I want him to be all that he can be even if it costs us an arm and a leg. I will not wait and see what happens. I am also a shy person but not to the extent that he is. This is a push for me too. It is just to painful for me to watch him be the odd man out because he won't join in.
