My son was 14 last year when he was diagnosed with scoliosis, and had to wear a brace for 22-23 hours a day. He did wear the brace faithfully for about 10 months but he eventually had surgery because the brace wasn't effective enough and his double curves were progressing. From our experiences, I would like to say that teenage boys can be mature enough to understand why they should wear the brace and to learn to cope with peers' reaction. It is important to give your son a lot of emotional support and help him maintain positive self-image so that he does not feel threatened about being different. It is in fact a good opportunity to teach your son that being different does not mean being inferior, and that it is ok to be different. If he really understands this, later on he will be less tempted to do things under peer pressure. Do encourage him to look at the positive side of the experience as well. I know this can be a tough and trying time for the entire family, but with love and understanding and support from everyone in the family, you all can get through this together. Good luck to you all.
