My name is Toni. I began having pain in my left knee at 8 years old. The peditrician I was seeing kept taking x-rays of my knees, since that is where I felt the pain. At age 13, I was diagnosed with Legg Perthes Disease from the Shriner's Childrens Hospital. I am now 30 years old and can hardly get around. The physicians I have seen say that I am too young for a hip replacement due to the fact that it only lasts 10-15 years. ok fine, I will take FIVE years of no pain every hour of the day, being able to run and play with my 9 year old son and do the things I havent been able to do most of my life, I'll take it... I have found that Perthes is more common in males than in females. At the time I was diagnosed (1983) there were under 50 cases of females in the United States with the problem. The research I have conducted left me running in circles... is there nothing in this day and age for Perthes sufferers to do? Technology hasn't given us a way to freely defy gravity to able us to float...sometimes it seems as if floating will stop the pain. i have been taking over 1600 mgs of ibuprophin to keep active but am i doing more damage to myself?? Please, if someone out there would like to talk about it, has any advice, any recommendations, email me @ tonindon1021@aol.com title it perthes reply. thank you oh to all those sufferers....i have found that relaxing in a swimming pool is the best pain relief.
