DIET FOR DIVERTICULITIS

Message 1 of 2 Next

I was diagnosed with minimal diverticulitis June 2000. My protologist provided me with the following recommendations: The American Dietetic Association recommends 20 to 35 grams of fiber each day. Fiber product such as Metamucil or Citrucel are recommended daily (1 tablespoon with 12 ounces of water)as a convenient alternative source of fiber. An 8 ounce glass provides 4 to 6 grams of fiber. Vegetables high in fiber are broccoli, cabbage, squash, spinach, carrots, asparagus, and beans. Fruits such as apples, peaches and berries are recommended. There is no evidence to support avoiding foods with small seeds such as strawberries and tomatoes. Whole grain breads and high fiber cereals supply fiber as well. The main cause of diverticulitis is a low-fiber diet because it increases constipation and pressure inside the colon. Diverticulitis occurs when the pouches in the intestines get infected or inflamed and cause pain and tenderness around the left side of the abdomen. Hope this information helps!
