Adolescent Bipolar Disorder

My daughter also has bipolar disorder and she displays the same symptoms you describe. She is now 26 and her adolescence was riddeled with much chaos and concern. The medicine you talk about is pretty normal for a "rapid cycling" individual. My words to you is to get a support system as soon as you can so you do not take on guilt that is not yours. This is an illness above all - but it is highly likely that you will blame yourself because you can do nothing to control the problem. The meds are a huge issue, and I recommend you advocate for your daughter and get a relationship with the physician so that someone LISTENS to YOU. Sometimes you get blown off and I would say not to let this happen and let people label you as overprotective or overinvolved. This is a serious illness with suicide potential if it is not watched. Get a couple of books on the disorder - I have no suggestions at this time, but I know that a therapist can guide you in book selection. Please do get a therapist and keep connected to one on a regular basis - good and bad times. You do not have to go to counseling all the time but there is a need to be connected so you can call anytine you see a need. This third party is essential to help keep the family equlibrium. Good Luck!!! K. Speck
