Low residue diet for acute diverticulitis

I am a nurse, not an authority on the subject but my husband is suffering with it right now... I think the most important thing during the acute phase is to maintain your fluid and electrolyte balance. You can do this by drinking plenty of clear liquids without carbonation: gatorade, water, chicken broth... things that don't have a lot of sugar, salt or seasonings...fairly bland liquids that you can see through. Then you may want to replace some of the good bacteria in your gut by having some yogurt drinks like "Nouriche", or plain yogurt. I mix in some Smuckers Sugarfree Seedless Blackberry Jam to the plain yogurt and it is pretty good that way. If you develop diarrhea from the antibiotics then bananas and yogurt should help along with plenty of yogurt to prevent dehydration. I keep a jar of babyfood bananas on hand in case I don't have fresh. Bananas have potassium that the body really needs when you have been having diarrhea. It may sound weird but you may want to ask a Dr. about a prescription for some breast milk from a milk bank. Breast milk is incredibly gentle and great for the digestive system. Good luck!
