2nd Cataract

Judie

Message 3 of 3 Previous

My son at age 4 was diagnosed with congenital cataracts. It has taken implants and 2 lots of laser to help. Now he is fine for the moment. The problem with implants is that they can cause a fibrous tissue build up, kind of like a cataract. Laser can fix this problem but they have to wait until it thickens up. It can be done one of two ways (my boy had it done both ways) 1. They can laser all around the rim of the cataract and then it curls back (I am lead to believe) That was unsuccessful and takes a while 2. the other method is a lot quicker. My little boy had this done twice. They "punch" a hole through the middle of the fibroous tissue, big enough for the light to get in. It is about the same size as your pupil. Takes about 10 minutes. My boy is now 7, he can see one line off the 20/20 chart with his glasses on. His reading section of his glasses is a lot stronger than the distance part of his glasses. He has years of follow up with the hospital in Melbourne Australia where we live. Hope that this info is what you need. Just be thankful you are not a little boy who just wants to fit in...and has trouble.
