Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy

I was diagnosed last month with RSD/CRPS after 3 mos. of excrutiating pain and no results from therapy. Mine is in my left hand and arm...the result of a messy break and surgery (a plate w/6 screws + carpal tunnel). A hand surgeon diagnosed the condition and immediately sent me to an anesthesiologist for stellate ganglion blocks. Both doctors said the normal series is 4-6, but I've had such dramatic results that my third (tomorrow) will probably be the last. Both agree that it is because of the fact they got to it early (months vs. years of pain) and the intensive therapy being done immediaely after the injections and daily between injections. I won't tell you the procedure is pleasant...but it sure is worth it. The pain diminishes within 5-10 mins, the swelling, discoloration and shininess have decreased significantly with each injection/block. I have a long way to go to get the use of my hand back, but at least the pain and swelling won't prevent it any longer. ...and the things I can do, be they little, have changed my whole outlook! Having a therapist who specializes in hands has helped tremendously as well and is an integral part of the procedure/treatment....even if she does seem like the therapist from Hell after a two hour session! Go for it if it is recommended by your doctor, or see a pain management doctor for a consultation!
