21/2 year old son's speech disorder

patience

Oh boy! Can I relate. My son is now 4 years and 9 months. We started on our quest for a diagnoses for Jessie at the age of 18 months. His speech was behind (expressively) but his receptive was right on target. He had some social problems but for the most part was very lovable and friendly. He was finally diagnosed with Verbal Dyspraxia at the age of 3 1/2 after taking him to Children's Hospital in Dallas for an evalutation. He has been in speech therapy twice a week every since. The biggest help came when we took him to a Pediatric Neuro Psychologist in January. She diagnosed him with apraxia of speech and also PDD-NOS (pervasive Developmental Disorder-Not otherwise Specified) Although it is considered a mild form of autism (which I HATE that word) it opened up alot of doors that was shut with the diagnoses of "just a speech disorder" He is now in speech, physical, and occupational therapy. It has worked wonders. He is by no means the same child. His speech is still broken but we can actually carry on a pretty good conversation. We also were able to get him into our local elementary school's Pre-K program. It's only three hours a day and because apraxia and PDD_NOS are considered disabilities he will also receive speech, physical, occupational therapy at school for 30 minutes a day. Hope this helps please feel free to email me at Jeremiah2911pdr@aol.com Jessie's mom, Patience
