ANTIBIOTIC ALLERGIES

IV antibiotics can be administered at home (at least in NY). An IV shunt is put into the arm or hand and then the IV antibiotics is hooked up to the shunt whenever needed. When done, it is disconnected. This may be beneficial for all of you because you can then be at home which is more comfortable than 7 days in the hospital. Call several of your local hospitals and ask to speak to the social worker department. Tell them of your predicament and ask for help or referrals. Tell them you want to find out what you can do before your child needs IV antibiotics again so you can be prepared while your emotions aren't flying because your child is sick. Also speak to your insurance company. Many of them have nursing personnel on staff that can help you figure out what to do. I am allergic to many antibiotics also and I have to use IV vancomycin when I get sick too. I do it at home. I am just an ordinary person not a nurse. Anyone can learn how to do it. With a child, a nurse will probably have to come in and teach you what to do to administer the IV. God bless and good luck. An after thought, did the doctors ever try giving your child Benadryl 1/2 hour before taking oral antibiotics to see if that takes care of the hives? Have you looked into holistic care?
