hypoglycemia

today is a very busy day for me here! I have answered a few other letters. Well, in regards to your letter, I was diagnosed with hypoglycemia also, in the early 80's. For some reason, could be better eating habits, after my daughter was born in '87, it seemed to get better and fluctuate between the low end of normal to just a bit low. I have over the years trained myself to eat more meals throughout the day rather than a few large ones. I can't tolerate large meals. Since I also have a problem with my stomach, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, I tend to feel nauseated and get stomach attacks and this causes me to have very few foods I can eat that I know won't aggrivate me. I have gotten so used to the way I eat, that I do not crave to eat really fatty or fried foods. I freeze pineapples and pears in a can, and one of my daughters is crazy for this also. I freeze grapes too. No matter what, I have learned that with this, we actually need to eat sugars and carbohydrates. We can't cut them out. Our bodies secrete too much insulin,so what we need to do to try and keep it as level as possible is, eat small meals throughout the day, and if we eat something sugary, within an hour we must eat protein. This helps 'level' off the insulin. If we don't eat something with protein, even a peice of cheese or tuna or a peice of turkey breast for example, not only will the extra insulin use up the sugar we just ate, but it will use our'reserves' and that is when we feel dizzy, cold, light headed, cranky and can't think. So what I do is, if I have eaten something like a bowl of cereal or something sugary, an hour later, I eat yogurt, or a peice of cheese, or already have an egg waiting for me, hard boiled. If you want to talk more about this, e-mail me. I keep pretzels around and things like that for snacking, instead of cookies and all, and go for the fruit. I won't lie and tell you I don't eat icecream or a peice of cake or other sweet. That is fine, especially if I will be walking around. I should eat better lunches, but soup and a half of sandwich is fine. Why don't you tell me your favorites, if you are thin as I am, or on the heavy side. I have been managing this now for 20 years and excersize and feel in control now. N
