Wow, does your doctor have the wrong information! You need to get to a nutritionist asap to help you figure out what diet is best for you. I was just recently diagnosed with hypoglycemia, which is the opposite of diabetes and should be treated differently. (which your doctor doesn't seem to know!) There are many informative books out there as well. The first one that I got was The Low Blood Sugar Handbook by Edward and Patricia Krimmel. I found it very informative and easy to follow. Another book recommended to me was Insulin Resistence by Dr. Ravin. I haven't read it. Please, please get to someone who is knoweledgeable about hypoglycemia, and won't just say that it is something in your head. They will help you to modify your sugars, balance your proteins and carbs and teach you to schedule your meals to help your body process to maximum efficiency. It takes some doing, but you will feel a huge difference!!! Good luck!
