I was given massive doses of steroids and as a result suffered AVN of hips, ankle, shoulder. I had to have a hip replacement 16 years after steroid therapy. In research I have done, I found that no matter what the dosage steroids can cause AVN as well as osteoporosis and other serious side effects. I suffer from osteoporosis and am on Actonel. Steroid therapy is used for many reasons. It seems to fix many problems and alleviate symptoms. It is important that a person be aware that these serious side effects can occur. You have to be careful that proper follow-up is given as AVN can continue to progress. My other hip has been followed and it appears that the progression has stopped. Good Luck
