I've had a hiatel hernia for years and had the same problem you do. My doctor suggested that I raise the head of my bed which I did, with cinder blocks. The only problem was, I kept sliding down to the foot of the bed. I saw the adjustable beds advertised on TV and asked the doctor about those. He said they would definitely help so he gave me a prescription for them (due to my condition) and my insurance paid for them. They were GREAT! I elevate my head, and raise the foot just enough so I don't slide down. Now when I go away, I have to take pillows off the bed and put under the head of the mattress to raise it before I can sleep.
