my experience has been... 1) elevate head of bed on blocks. 2) use EXTRA pillows. 3) do not eat after 6pm, especially tomatoes, butter, or fried foods, watch to see what foods contribute to your distress & avoid. Eat smaller portions. 4) Gaviscon chewable,(over the counter), coats esophagus, to help prevent damage from stomach acid. 5) see your doctor for evaluation, further testing & his instructions, there are RX to help, also. My doctor gave me prilosec. This is only my experience but it does make a difference.
