keratosis pilaris

I remember noticing KP when I was about five or six. I was self-conscious throughout high school and avoided sleevless shirts and rarely went swimming because of this. It would come and go without explanation, but I did notice tanning helped tremendously during my senior year. I no longer tan and am looking for another treatment. From what I've read, Accutane is the only drug able to erradicate this skin disorder. It is highly controversial however and I doubt most dermatologists would prescribe it for this skin condition. I must say however, that my overall quality of life has suffered, and my self-esteem so tremendously that I think it should be a treatment option. Last week I began an experiment taking a beta-carotene supplement (vitamin A)500% recommended daily allowance. I found it at my local K-Mart. I am the text-book example: backs of the arms, thighs front and back all the way to my knee caps, and buttocks. I've suffered with hay fever all my life, chronic sinusitis, could never use bubble baths, and generally very dry skin. A dermatologist gave me an Rx for the LacHydrin 12% lotion but I noticed nothing. However, I only used it one week and became frustrated. Currently I'm using Proactiv Solution with positive results. After one week using the Deep Cleansing Wash and Repair Lotion the rough bumps are gone from the backs of my arms and little redness is evident. My thighs are more stubborn. I will try the other suggestions I've read here and cross my fingers.
