lymphedema

Message 1 of 1

I have breast cancer with mets to the lungs. I had a mastectomy on the left side with 10 lymph nodes removed in February of 2000 and have been on chemo since March. I just started radiation today. Although I have no lymphedema now, I am very concerned about developing it. I always wear a compression sleeve when I fly, and am careful to avoid injury to my left arm and so on. My big concern is developing Lymphedema from the radiation. In fact, the radiologist would like to radiate the axilla as well as the chest wall and scar site but I have refused. I fear that direct radiation to the axilla will tremendously increase the chances of developing lymphedema. I feel the present radiation is risky enough and have put this off for nearly a year as it is. Any suggestions for me? Should I wear a compression sleeve as protection during and after radiation? Has anybody else already gone through this? Jeri
