my children's grandfather has enphysema and is now on oxygen. he has to sleep sitting up, and has for some time. he is 81 and smoked for years and years before he quit about 4 years ago. my question is this; does emphysema in and of itself cause death or are there complications that can contribute. as of last week they suspect phnuemonia also. without making a diagnosis, can anyone tell me just how life threatening this can be? thank you. i appreciate any help. linda
