my 14 y/o daughter was just hospitalized with rashes on various body areas. the areas begain itching, then turning red (like measles) growing into raised red blotches that spread with touch.(they looked like boiling water was poured on her) she c/o stinging and burning. she was afebrile, but her skin was burning to touch. the episodes peaked in 20 mins and then subside. she would then become lethargic, but would respond verbally. in 2/12- 3 hrs the rash would begin again. Each time it covered a greater area, and was more intense in pain. she was treated in the er w/ epinefrine subq. for the first episode, after arriving in ER. the 2nd time w/ benedryl 50mg po which was ineffective. an iv was inserted and sol-u-medrol was given push. 20 min. later she begin to clear up again. the mext time, it started on her ankles & soles of feet. this time the blotches were red circles w/ white centers. she also had pain in mid abdomen in stomach region each time upon palpation(none when the episode was over) she was given atarax po. after 18hrs in er she was admitted, even after labs the rash remained unexplained. the next am, i watched the rash begain growing on her chest and neck. i had to place ice packs on her to help the pain. she begain having trouble swollowing. her knuckles wer red swollen circles w/ white centers, her b/p was up and her HR was 120. she was given subq epinefrine, atrax po, and iv sol-u-medrol, in 20 mins she was better and the rash was fading, she then begame lethargic . I told the medical staff she was in a pattern of peaks and valleys with the cycling of rashing. i could NOT get them to do labs during the rash peaks. i had to insist on lab for lyme disease. and the head nurse suggest lab for Post strep syndrone since she had had a sore throat for 2 nights before the rashes started. she was discharged from the hospital w/o an expaination. she was prescribed Prednisone, Allegra and Naproxan for knee joint pain. since being home she has had the rash but mildly and goes away as quick as it comes. we live near a chemical plant, no one we know has ever had this before. the head nurse stated she has a friend whose child had a similar rashing that lasted 6 wks and went unexplained. we need help with this ASAP. thanks AR
