Cracking can be due to a fungal infection and can be quite painful. Lupus also presents with skin problems. See a dermatologist or your rheumatologist and insist that they examine and test the skin to see just what the problem is. I have fibromyalgia and psorriasis and I was treated over and over for what the doctors and I thought was a fungal infection till finally a rheumatologist did a skin scraping and told me that the foot skin thickening and toenail problem was from the psorriasis!!!
