catherine, I do know that this desease can affect the heart because of the lack of oxygen. We still have alot to find out. Prednisone is a treatment that is often tried . My mom had bad side affects and we are going to find out other options since she is seeing her pulomologist this week. I do know that this is a progressive desease. There are some studies being done for arresting it. They do not know what causes it. Wish you luck with your mom! Denise
