Respiratory failure after bypass and ventilators

Message 1 of 2 Next

My father recently had bypass surgery for the second time. He is 74 and never had any other health problems. He has been in St.Lukes Hospital located in Houston,Tx for 32 days. His left lung has collapsed with pneumonia and other cultures have been performed that show infection. He now has a trache and is ha ving a hard time getting off the ventilator due to damage from the surgery. We were told his diaphragm has damage due to the cold during the surgery. I am looking for someone to help me better understand this diagnosis and help me understand how the diapragm works and is there another muscle that can compensate for helping him breathe on his own. They have suggested he go through rehab at a facility that weans people off of vents. If anyone has any info please let me know by email asap. I would greatly appreciate it!
