BLOOD DISORDERS

Susan

Message 11 of 12 Previous Next

My brother had this happen. He got treated at Brigham's and Women's hospital last year around this time for severe burns, and since he was going to be laying in a bed a while, I told my mother to have them check him for Antiphospholipid syndrome, which I have and is considered genetic. He was found to have MASSIVE amounts of clots in his legs, some which got into his lungs also. He is taking cumiden for these. Antiphospholipid syndrome is difficult to treat because most doctors do not know how to test for it. it is similar to lupus, but it attacks lipids that carry phosphorous. My high risk pregnancy doctor found that I had it during my last pregnancy and I am currently trying to determine what test he did to confirm it since no other doctor I have gone to has ever heard of this and doesn't know what to test me for. Lipid levels will come out normal, so that is not the right test. It is an antibody level that needs to be checked. It is my understanding that medication will not make this go away, and it is a lifelong disorder. -Susan
