Our son was diagnosed with an ear infection at 8 mos old by an emergency physician while we were out of town for a weekend. After 2 days he seemed to be getting better, then all of a sudden he got worse. His pediatrician found no signs of an ear infection and decided to do a spinal tap because there were signs of meningitis. The results showed bacterial meningitis and we were immediately rushed to the hospital. Our son was in intensive care for about a month before he showed any signs of improving. Aaron is now 2 years old. He suffered some brain damage and also suffers from seizures, most of the seizures occur when he wakes up from sleep. Although he is not talking yet. He is walking and interacts with us and always smiling. Unfortunately we will never know whether or not he had an ear infection. And as we found out later the meningitis could have come from an ear infection. I also read that there is a vaccine for infants and toddlers but is only suggested if there is a strong possibility of the child contracting meningitis. They do this because the shots are so expensive. I suggest that parents push to get the vaccine in their children.
