I have hypoglycemia. I have read several books and studies on this disorder. I have talked to nutritionists and doctors that hardly know anything about hypoglycemia (most nutritionists are thoroughly trained to deal with diabetes which is very different from hyp.). So, your friend is probably misinformed on this disorder. Tell him to go to hypoglycemia websites and read case studies. As well, The Zone is an excellent book on controlling insulin levels. But, to answer your question, hypoglycemia can be hereditary or not. No one in my family has it and I have severe reactive hypoglycemia. Sometimes, as well, hyp. is a precursor to diabetes. Some hyp. is unexplained and doctors do not know exactly how it begins. Well, anyway, I know that this was probably more than you were looking for, I hope it helps. Angela
